When thinking about the integration of the European sovereign states in the European Union, one does not need to be a euro-sceptic to perceive a a big fish devouring a little one. Of course, the individuality of the different countries is assured in the European Union.
By Article I-5(1) of the European Constitution , Europe is to be “United in diversity”. Yet, however considerate the Union may be of the various European countries, unity can exist only by the grace of all member states' loyally fulfilling their European obligations. In this paper, I use the case of Romanian integration in the European Union to examine points of contestation around the benefits that come from this process in the actual context. The wider context of the paper is the enquiry into the significance of integration at the boundaries of the polity. Integration and the role each country comes to play in European mechanisms are subjects to contestations in Romania, as well as in other European countries, not only amongst academics but also between politicians and opinion-makers.
The key question seem to be: “How does Romania's integration impact upon it?”. The paper identifies and elaborates various sets of contestations over citizenship and integration debates involving both Romania – EU affairs and internal Romanian business related to the European context, which in turn illuminate the broader characters of possible costs and benefits that the integration might bring.
