Transnational corporations in Republic of Moldova

Speaking about the impact of transnational corporations on the economic development of the Republic of Moldova, it is necessary to mention the fact that large companies prefer to influence its national economy mainly by the establishment of joint ventures here. Affiliated and assimilated companies are presented in Moldova more rarely than firms with foreign capital.
The peak of M&As in the Republic of Moldova was registered in 2000 (27 mln. dollars). This event directly influenced the amount of FDI flows into the country: from 52.1 mln. dollars in 1999 they had rocketed to 142.9 mln. dollars in 2000. The same thing happened to FDI stocks in Moldova: for just five years they had risen to 353 mln. dollars – from 93 mln. in 1995 to 446 in 2000. The growth continued further, but with not so sharp rise, reaching 717 mln. dollars in 2002.

However, despite all those increasing sums, after September 11, 2001 the degree of inward FDI growth in percentage points began to decrease. During the period of 2001 – 2004 the parameter had decreased by 9 % (from 19 % in 2001 to 10 % in 2004). The reason is that foreign investors collided here with different investment problems and obstacles, starting from a difference in the cost of registration of joint ventures and firms with the Moldavian capital, and finishing with an outrage in the judiciary. Though, some measures equalizing the rights of residents and non-residents at the moment of registration are already adopted.
