This Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China prides itself on its connection with China yet independence from the presence of a socialist system. With its independent legal system, own currency, immigration policies, and education initiatives among Hong Kong's unique traits, the concept of 'one country, two systems' truly depicts Hong Kong's relationship with China.

Hong Kong has a booming economy; in fact, it is recognised by the Index of Economic Freedom as offering the freest economy in the world. It is also often referred to as the 'gateway to China', both literally and figuratively. Not only is there excellent transportation to the mainland, but China is one of the most imperative trading partners with Hong Kong. China's rapidly developing marketplace is dependent on the expertise of Hong Kong's financial sector and highly developed infrastructure. As in most cities, student accommodation comes in many forms. Home-stays, university housing, and off-campus housing are all popular in Hong Kong. If you plan to take part in an exchange program, your school will likely assist you with finding a place. University housing can cost upwards of US$3,000. If you wish to live off-campus, there are several organizations in Hong Kong who can help you in your search. The YMCA, Hong Kong Tourism Board Accommodation Search, and Caritas are good places to start, but again, international student accommodation in Hong Kong is not cheap, especially if you prefer to live near your campus. Weather/Climate
Weather in Hong Kong is sub-tropical, with temperatures rarely below 5 C. The region is at its hottest between May and August, with August being the wettest month, with rainy days averaging about four days per week. Tropical cyclones can occur in summer months and are assessed through a three-stage warning system. Clothes for rainy days are essential.
Transport
Public transportation in Hong Kong is excellent, with buses, trains, taxis, trams, and minibuses among the plethora of transport vehicles. The Octopus card is an excellent option for anyone planning on using public transport in Hong Kong, as it allows you to pre-pay (top up) for your travels. The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) is the fastest way around town, not to mention economically priced. Taxis, believe it or not, are also not too expensive.
