Not very far from Bucharest(200 km), Craiova lies in the Romanian Plain, on the left side of the river Jiu, at equal distance(about 100 km) from the Danube (to the South) and the Carpathians (to the North).
As the capital of the historical province of Oltenia, Craiova is an historic, commercial and cultural centre.
The town is famous for its university, which gladly accepts foreign students.The National Theatre has achived great fame being awarded many intrnational prizes at fastivals all over the world.The Art Museum with its permanent "C. Brancusi" exhibition is worth visiting.There are also many other places of cultural interest.
The University of Craiova was founded in 1947. Nowadays, it comprises 17 faculties and 2 colleges: philology, philosophy, sociology, history, law, chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, theology, economics, agronomy and polytechnics.

Admission requirements
The University of Craiova''s policy is open to international students and there is no social, ethic or religions discrimination. The admission requirements are harmonized nationally, the sine qua non condition being the high-school graduation diploma There are no restrictions, such as age limits, high score in general or in certain areas, no general aptitude tests or limitation of the places available. Still, for admission at studies in the field of arts and sports, you may be able to pass some basic skills tests.
The university also admit students who participate in exchange programmes in so far as they comply with the requirements.
The tuition fee for foreign students is 320 US$ per month for bachelor programs and 340 US$ per month for master programs. This fee has to be paid in advance for at least three months. It will enable you to use all the study facilities the University offers to the regular students, such as access to library, sport bases etc. The tuition fee does not cover the expenses that are not related to the teaching activities, such as medical insurance, visa fees, accommodation, meals etc. The University of Craiova offers accommodation for international students at low prices.

The courses begin every year on October 1st and finish at the end of June. The academic year consists of two semesters, each comprising 14 weeks of teaching activities followed by two examination sessions.

Language of instruction
For most of the study programs, the courses are taught in Romanian; therefore foreign students should have a good command of Romanian. The courses designed for the students in philology are delivered in the language(s) of their major/minor specialization, i.e. English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Russian. The University also organises language courses during a preparatory academic year, when, along with language learning the basic knowledge in the fields that will make up the premise of your future training are refreshed. These courses finish with a certificate of proficiency in Romanian. At the University of Craiova there are two "filieres francophones", in the engineering field - Faculté de Électrotechnique - "Génie Électrique", Faculté de Ingénieurs Électromécaniciens - Génie Électromecanique - where all the courses are taught in French.
Getting here
Craiova is at the junction of Romania''s main roads and railways. The airport is situated at the end of the city and provides domestic flights.
Travel by plane
The nearest international airports are in Bucharest and Timisoara. Bucharest, the capital of the country, is 230 km away from Craiova on the road and 210 km away on the railway. Whichever way you may choose, it is a 3 hours travel from Craiova to Bucharest and 4 hours from Craiova to Timisoara, which is 330 km away.
Travel by train
Craiova is situated on the main line crossing Romania from East to West and linking Timisoara to Bucharest. You can easily reach Craiova by train - from Paris, Munich, Budapest, Salonic etc. the railway station is located in the North within walking distance from the University. You can take a bus or a taxi to the University and the fares are 0.20 euro and 0.50 euro, respectively.
Travel by car
Craiova is situated at the junction of the European routes E70, E79 and E574. The customs are at Giurgiu and Calafat for the Bulgarian border, at Drobeta Turnu-Severin and Jimbolia for the Serbian border and at Nadlac and Bors for the Hungarian border.
Accommodation
Hostels provide accommodation for incoming students within limits. Rooms are equipped with a bathroom and cable television. The charge is relatively low, but students are strongly advised to look rooms in due time. The charge for single rooms is 5 euro per day. The rent for a flat in town varies between 100-150 euro per month according to the number of rooms, comfort and residential area.
Meals
Students can have meals at the university canteens and cafeteria. They work within fixed hours (12-6 p.m.) and the charge is relatively low. According to the menu, lunch will can amount to 2 - 5 euro.
Computing
The facilities offered by the university include rooms were students may use computers. The computers are connected to a local network, which enables the access to the Internet. There are 3 rooms especially designed for students where they can word process, use the e-mail and navigate on the Internet at lower traffic.
